RV/Caravan Scenario
Vehicle Mounted Solar Panels - Mobile Solar Power Made Easy!
There are various vehicle models on the market using solar power., including self-propelled RVs, trailers, off-road vehicles, trucks, ordinary cars, bicycles, etc.

What does solar power mean for RVs?
The most important thing in RV travel is to solve the problem of electricity consumption. Generally speaking, the basic configuration of the RV is to generate electricity from the engine and is equipped with 1 to 2 batteries and 1000 to 3000W inverters. When the RV is driving, the generator will generate electricity to directly charge the battery of the RV. But the biggest disadvantage of engine power generation is that long-term parking will lead to insufficient power. Although neutral gear can solve the power problem, noise and fuel consumption will have a certain negative impact on the life of the RV.
How to use solar energy for RVs? Solar panels laid on the roof of the car absorb sunlight and convert it to AC power for daily use through an inverter. The converted electric energy can be used directly or stored in the battery for emergency needs.
The effect of RV solar energy is related to product quality, installation method, usage method and region.

Solar cell system composition
The solar energy system applied to the RVs mainly consists of solar photovoltaic modules, solar charging controller and batteries.

Precautions for using solar energy in RVs
1. To install solar modules, you need to calculate how many watts of solar modules you need based on the electricity used by your RV’s electrical appliances, and then calculate how much battery you need based on how many days of power reserve you probably need, and then you need to see whether the calculated components can meet the requirements of the roof area, whether the design is reasonable, then make improvements.
2. For the installation of solar modules, you need to pay attention to: first, no stepping on them; second, no blocking by shadows.
3. The solar system of the RV must be equipped with a controller to prevent overcharge and over discharge of the battery. If you don’t use the car for a long time, it happens that the light is strong these few days. If there is no controller, charging the battery all the time will cause overcharging, which will greatly reduce the service life of the battery.

Several issues that users are concerned about
1. why the product quality is uneven?
The entire RV solar system involves solar modules, controllers, inverters, batteries, etc. It is more complicated to connect them together. Solar modules include single crystal and polycrystalline, controllers include MPPT and PMW, batteries include lead-acid, colloidal, and lithium batteries. Each part also involves various parameters such as power, voltage, and current. Most people do not have professional power knowledge, so they are at a loss. The quality of solar products on the market is uneven, and ordinary consumers do not have the ability to identify them. If you buy low-quality solar products, the power generation effect will naturally be poor.

2. I installed a 200W system, why is it almost ineffective?  In addition to product quality, the power generation effect of a solar system is also related to whether it is installed correctly. Take Shawllar's 100w RV solar system as an example. If it is our professional installation, it can generate about 1 kWh of light for 10 hours a day under good light conditions. But the light conditions in each area are different, for example, the light conditions in Tibet are much better than those in Suzhou.

But without professional installation, this may not be the case. Solar modules have two ways of series and parallel, different connection, the effect is not the same. For example, the connection is simpler in series than in parallel, but in the case of local shadows, series has a greater impact on the overall power. Therefore, it is necessary to choose the most appropriate connection mode according to the specific situation. In general, in order to give consideration to the operation and efficiency, we will choose the same side in series and the opposite side in parallel.

3. If I install 200W solar energy system, can it run the air conditioner?
The RV's solar system generates electricity first into the car's battery, rather than directly powering appliances. So, how much electrical power can be driven has nothing to do with how big the RV's solar system is, but with the inverter. The power of the inverter should be greater than the power of the electrical appliance, so that the electrical appliance can work normally. The size of the RV solar system is directly related to the amount of electricity generated, and the duration of the power supply. In the example above, a 200-watt system produces a kilowatt-hour of electricity per day, which is more than enough for lighting (usually around 60 watts) and it can also be used for televisions, laptops, fridges, kettles, rice cookers, and other appliances. But if you want to use air conditioning (about 700W) such a high-power electrical appliance, you need to install a more powerful solar system, and of course, you must also consider the area that can be installed on the roof.

4. The more the solar panels on the roof are covered, the better?
In order to maximize the use of the roof area, many people hope that the solar panels on the roof are spread as full as possible. But in fact, even the roof is full, if there is no professional installation and solar module design, the power cannot be maximized. In addition, if the roof is full, there is no room for installation and maintenance. Stepping on the solar module will cause great damage to the module. Some unscrupulous merchants only consider selling more components and do not consider the subsequent consequences at all.

5. I can also use gasoline generators or large batteries to generate electricity. Why do I need to install solar panels?
Gasoline generators and large batteries can indeed meet the demand. The disadvantages of gasoline generators are that the oil is difficult to buy and inconvenient to carry, and coupled with pollution and unavoidable noise. No matter how big the battery is, the battery may run out, so charging must be limited to the camp. The RV solar-assisted power generation system allows RVs to travel beyond the campsite for charging. Solar energy is also silent and environmentally friendly, and electricity can be generated if there is enough sunlight.

6. How much electricity can a solar panel charge in a day?
If a solar panel with a rated power of 400W, in the case of standard light intensity and battery power shortage, theoretically an hour’s storage capacity is 400W÷18V×12V×1h = 0.267kW·h, which is what we often call 0.267 degrees electricity, if calculated according to an average of 6 hours of light per day. Then 0.267kW·h×6 = 1.602kW·h, which is about 1.6 kWh of electricity.

After calculation, we can see that, theoretically, a set of 400W solar panels can generate 1.6 kilowatt-hours of electricity a day. If the light intensity and the intermediate loss of electricity are included, the charging efficiency is calculated at 70%, the actual amount of charge in a day is 1.6×.0.7=1.12 kWh.

So, what electrical appliances can this 1.12 kilowatt-hours of electricity support the normal operation?
Take a self-propelled C-type RV within 6 meters as an example. The total lighting equipment of the RV is calculated as 100W for the time being, 80W refrigerator, 80W LCD TV, 30W notebook and mobile phone, the combined power is about 300W, which means that these electric devices can work together for 1.6÷0.3=5.3 hours. Now everyone should understand, so many professional players will recommend that you choose solar energy between 300-400W.

The efficient and clean photovoltaic power generation method enables the RV to go and stop more freely. If you have any doubt, please no hesitate to find Shawllar !
